It's Bank Holiday today so decided that on a glorious sunny day like today is the perfect day to fit the tank to the '15 R1200GS Adventure with my Givi Trekker Outback rack fitted.
Prepared all the necessary parts and tools ready to do the job and started by loosely fitting the brackets to the take and loosening off the Givi Rack mounting points and removed the support cross bar from the rear of the bike as well as the number plate. Having successfully offered up the tank to the bike and logically figured out what parts and bracks went where I started by thread locking all the bolts that hold the various brackets to the tank then loosely, again, fitted the tank using the brackets to the bike / Givi Rack. Happy to say was an almost99.9 % perfect fit, just a little pressure needed to get the bolt supplied to take into the welded nylock nut welded to the bracket near the filler cap. Still leaving everything loose I then tracked both the breather line and fuel line from the front of the tank, having removed the tank centre fairing only (as it's an Adventure model) this proved very easy to pass both line down the gap found on the front left (as you sit on the bike) of the tank that easily passed down the gap allowing me to then route both lines down the left side (as you sit on the bike) back to the Aux tank. Having attached the end of the vent line using the junction piece supplied to the vent line now having been removed from the side of the bikes petrol filler cap, then attaching the fuel supply line to the now empty bike fuel cap (red) filler cap (now inlet port). Happy that the line were nowhere near any moving parts such as suspension/ swinging arm, I then started to cable tie the lines in place to ensure no movement possible while riding and attached the lines to the air vent and fuel outlets on the tank.
All now in place, assessed and then assessed again, I started to tighten all fittings, where possible using thread lock on all fittings, leaving only the bracket to be attached to the rear cross member support bar not tightened or attached to the support bar as yet.
I then refitted all the fairing panels removed to allow the fitting. Again making sure the lines in no way are near anything sharp or moving. I then refitted the cross member support bar to which I attached the supplied aux tank support bracket to the left side (as you sit on the bike) and again tightened everything as required.
Happy that the tank was now fully fitted I filled the Aux tank 3/4 full and took the bike for a quick end of the road and back test ride about 10 times and had no issues, unusual noise or problems to speak off so took the bike to my nearest petrol station and filled both the Aux and Main petrol tanks fully and reset my trip so I can then keep record of the approximate capacity/ range my '15 R1200GS Adventure now has. I hope to be able to get approx 650 miles from full to nearly empty but will report my findings as a test ride over the coming weeks. Thank you for a top quality product that was easy to fit for a home enthusiast bike rider.
I look forward to next July when I am taking on an epic 12,500 kilometer trip from the Isle of Man to Liverpool via ferry, ride done the length of the UK to the Channel Tunnel, ride across to Denmark and take the bridges to Sweden, up Sweden, through Norway via Oslo, Bergen, Trondheim, Nordkapp, then through Finland down to Helsinki along the Russian border (keep you head down!) across from Helsinki to Talin and ride through Europe via Austria, Italy, Germany etc back to the Channel Tunnel, back through the UK to Liverpool, taking the ferry back home to the Isle of Man!! All in just 13 days!
Thanks again!
